Saskatoon Berry Thiessen
Thiessen produces blue-purple fruit, good for eating fresh or in pie, possibly the best tasting. It has the appearance of a large, long, oval-shaped shrub, 4 m (14 ft.) high, which is maintained at a height of 2 m (6 ft.) by removing the large diameter stems. It blooms early and produces very large fruits (up to 10 mm in diameter). Its flavor is not as sweet as that of the Smokey saskatoon.**Yield 800 to 3 600 kg/ha. The saskatoon tree produces a delicious berry called saskatoon or small pear. This beautiful shrub is native to northern climates. It grows best in a sandy loam where water and air flow well. The plants bloom heavily in the spring and then in July offer a great profusion of purple to blue-purple berry clusters. The fruits have an increased pectin content and are therefore more suitable for jams and jellies. This shrub grows best in full sun and its fruits are very popular with birds. The saskatoon will have a better fruit set if another variety is planted nearby. The installation of an irrigation system will optimize the yields, especially in periods of drought.
